How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
Nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.
He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither, and in whatever he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so, but they are like chaff which the wind drives away
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous
For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
The psalmist here gives us the perfect prescription for emotional stability! There is no better prescription that man can offer than what this psalmist has! First of all, the word blessed in verse one is defined in Hebrew as “happy”. Isn’t that really where we all want to be, always? Do you think there will be even one moment in heaven where we won’t be happy? Happiness is the perfect emotional state. But because we live in a chaotic and fallen world where death, sickness, and pain have its way with many of us, sometimes it can seem impossible to find happiness and keep it. For those who have lost it, or maybe never truly had it in the first place, here is your simple two step plan to receiving it.
Happiness is achievable to those who do are not influenced by the ungodly. There are three ways, according to verse one, to not be influenced by the ungodly: do not take their counsel, do not stand in their way, and do not sit in their seats! To experience true happiness you need to draw closer to God, not be lead away from Him. An ungodly person will never lead you closer to God. God wants you to be among them to influence them, not for them to influence you. So step one: Do not be influenced by the ungodly!
Step two of this two step plan would be to delight in God’s Word. The term delight here also means to take pleasure in. Take pleasure in God’s Word and you will find happiness. God’s Word is His instructions for you and your life. We are created in God’s image so it makes perfect sense that He would want to raise us up properly. Its like parents, who feel obligated to teach their children how to live their lives. Remember when you were a child and you didn’t do what your parent s told you? You created a moment of unhappiness, not only for them but yourself also. How much more when we choose to not listen to our heavenly Father? After so long we become experts in creating unhappiness all around us. That’s why many ultimately come to a moment of repentance, because they understand they have caused all that unhappiness and they want to get back on the right track. Well to stay on the right track we must take pleasure in God’s Word!
There are some great benefits to this two step process aside from being happy! Ever feel as though when your unhappy, you feel tired, sluggish, and maybe drained? Well according to verse three you will feel like a brand new person! You will feel like someone who has an endless supply of energy! Imagine no longer feeling like you can’t get out of bed before 11 am? Imagine not feeling like you have to be to bed early because you just so tired and worn out? In those times of unhappiness, do you feel like everything you try to do is unsuccessful? Imagine having great success in everything you do? There is a promise to be had here so take full advantage of it! God wants to bless you but you must follow His instructions in order to experience His blessings!
Verses four through six explain how to stay unhappy, and that is by not following this simple two step plan. Continue seeking advice from ungodly people, and running with them, and hanging out with them and being influenced by them. They will definitely keep you in a state of anything but happiness! And continue not finding pleasure in God’s Word! You will continue to find yourself in unhappy circumstances. I do not endorse this paragraph lol. I hope you make God and His Word the very center of your life so you can experience what true emotional stability is all about.
